Design of Hygroscopic Bioplastic Products Stable in Varying Humidities

Hygroscopic biopolymers like proteins and polysaccharides suffer from humidity-dependent mechanical properties. Because humidity can vary significantly over the year, or even within a day, these polymers will not generally have stable properties during their lifetimes. On wheat gluten, model highly hygroscopic biopolymer material, it is observed that larger/thicker samples be more mechanically than thinner samples. It shown here this due to slow water diffusion, which, in turn, rigid polymer structure caused by double-bond character of peptide bond, many bulky side groups, hydrogen bond network. More year required reach complete moisture saturation (≈10 wt.%) 1 cm thick plate glycerol-plasticized whereas process takes only one day for 0.5 mm plate. The overall uptake also retarded swelling-induced effects. Hence, are better suited products, where moisture-induced changes smeared out time, extent product remains sufficiently tough climate changes, example, throughout course year.
